Globalstar Inc. subsidiary Spot LLC, makers of the Spot Satellite Messenger, is integrating its service with Yahoo's Fire Eagle, the Internet portal's open platform for managing user location information.

The Fire Eagle integration specifically enables Spot Satellite Messenger users the ability to publish their geotags or location coordinates to the web, sharing their location with services and social networking sites, according to Spot. "SPOT's global coverage makes it an ideal Fire Eagle updater, giving users the ability to easily share their location from almost anywhere on the planet,'' said Tom Coates, head of product at Yahoo Brickhouse.

The Spot Satellite Messenger is designed to sends a user's GPS location coordinates and custom messages to co-workers, family and friends, or emergency responders over Globalstar's satellite communications network, according to the company. It can be configured to send regular messages or act as a personal locator beacon in the case of an emergency, sending the user's location to emergency personnel. The device can also save GPS location data and export it in CSV, GPX, and KML formats, in addition to the Fire Eagle capability.

To use Yahoo Fire Eagle with the Spot device, users have to sign up for a free account through Yahoo.
